Interim AI Lead.

Experienced AI leadership on a temporary basis — until your own structure is in place.

DACH-wide

In 2026, AI leadership is a bottleneck: the market for experienced AI leads is swept clean, a permanent hire takes months and is often only justified above a certain initiative size. At the same time, your AI roadmap needs someone to own it now — otherwise it stays on paper, service providers manage themselves, and every project invents its own standards.

The Interim AI Lead closes this gap on a temporary basis: experienced AI leadership two to three days per week, with a clear brief and a built-in end. They own the roadmap and budget, provide technical leadership to external developers, build up internal talent — and make themselves redundant as planned, once your own structure can carry the load.

01

Onboarding & situation assessment (month 1)

Stocktake of ongoing initiatives, service providers and budgets; building relationships with business units, IT and the works council; first quick-win decisions and stop recommendations.

02

Establish steering (months 2–3)

Sharpen or set up the roadmap, introduce success measurement and a reporting rhythm, professionalise supplier management, dovetail governance foundations with data protection.

03

Deliver & enable (month 4 onwards)

Bring initiatives to impact, identify and systematically build up internal AI owners — with growing ownership instead of permanent dependency on the interim.

04

Handover (final 2–3 months)

Structured transfer of responsibility to the internal successor: documented decision logic, established routines, a supported transition phase. The end is planned from day one.

  • An owned AI roadmap with budget management and shareholder reporting
  • Professionalised service-provider management with measurable delivery targets
  • Internal AI owners built up, with a documented development path
  • Established decision-making and governance routines that work without the interim
  • A quarterly impact review: what the AI initiatives have measurably delivered
  • A structured handover with a defined end date
What does an Interim AI Lead cost?
At two to three days per week and the day rates of experienced profiles (1,200 to 1,700 euros, based on our market observation), the monthly budget typically sits in the low to mid five-figure range — compared with the cost of a mis-hire or a leaderless AI portfolio, usually the more economical option.
Interim AI Lead or hire permanently straight away?
If you already know today that AI permanently requires its own leadership role, and you can absorb a 6–12 month search period: hire. If the roadmap needs leadership now, or the requirement is still unclear: interim — it not only bridges the gap but also defines the requirements profile for the permanent appointment along the way.
How do you ensure that no permanent dependency develops?
The end is part of the contract: a handover goal, internal capability building and an exit plan are carried from day one. An interim who makes themselves indispensable has failed their brief — we test for this mindset in every profile we place.
Can the Interim AI Lead work remotely?
Hybrid is the standard: on-site presence for committees, workshops and critical conversations, remote for steering and conceptual work. Fully remote works in mature organisations, but it is rarely the best choice for a leadership role in mid-sized companies.
